A Long History of Racial Desegregation & Discrimination in the Ann Arbor Public Schools

This public history article illustrates the historical pattern of racial segregation and discrimination within Ann Arbor Public Schools from the mid-20th century into the 21st century. From the closing of the Jones School to the multiple committees formed to evaluate and solve racial imbalance in AAPS, black students in Ann Arbor bore the brunt of the school board's actions (or lack thereof). Ultimately, this article aims to acknowledge and uplift the voices and stories of black students and community members who were affected by the school district's decades of failed attempts at achieving educational equity.
